Antique CF Monroe Wavecrest Opal Vanity Box - USA. Opal ware, known by the trades as an opaque, creamy white glass with a matte finish, was popular in 1890-1910. It was one of CF Monroe's specialties and the company became one of the largest producers out of Meridian, CT. CF Monroe did not manufacture its own glass, but bought blanks and artists decorated the glass. The large 5" vanity box is hand-painted with delicate pastel colors in a centered floral spray; raised white enamel dots accent flower branches centered on a beige tinted edge with molded scrolls on lid. Very feminine piece for trinkets or vanity top decor.
Estate find in good condition with tarnish to ormolu hardware. Minor surface scratches to glass bottom rim. The lid and box ormolu (gold over brass) collar have working hinge and clasp and may have been polished. No lining. Stamped with red Wavecrest banner trademark. Measurements approximate: 5 " L; 3" W and 2.75" H
